Popovy Couture Creation

Inspired by High Couture Fashion of the 1990s - 2000 era, when designers began borrowing various elements from history and incorporating them in their own designs in modern and edgy ways. The catwalk became a canvas for fantasy and avant garde  imagination-  underwear became acceptable on the runway as outerwear, notably with Gaultier's cone-bra worn by Madonna. With the rise of designers like Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, and Paul Gaultier, the high fashion world became an ephemeral platform for impractical and otherworldly creations. Compared to previous era's when a mere few centimetres of raised hemline could cause a stir, designers now had to stretch their imaginations to cause shock and gossip.
This era truly paved the way for fashion as we know it today, where "everything has been done" in previously in history, and designers are forced to look to the past and rely on their imaginations to come up with new combinations of refreshing the old.

This steely blue-grey "High Fashion" ensemble was created using the French traditional en-toile method: of laying fabric pieces directly on the model and hand-sewing to create one-of-a-kind couture versus using pattern pieces. Many of the fabrics start out as remnant "scraps" from designer gown offcuts, and I allow myself to react to their shape and colour, and how they sit on the doll when deciding on a design direction. I sew in a highly organic way, allowing the fabrics, textures and colours to dictate the direction of my design along the way, relying on aesthetics and meticulous design choices. Pieces are pinned, sewn, measured, re-measured, sewn, and adjusted until they fit the model perfectly, in this case the elegant and spindly bodies of the Popovy dolls.

Organza and beaded netting blouse, lace-up corset, ruffled panties with tiny silk bows, miniature stocking garters complete with tiny gold buckles, fine nylon hose with silk tassels and ribbon rosette's from Mokuba in Paris.

Collaboration - The Enchanted Forest

The Enchanted Forest

I have had the pleasure of being part of a fantastic collaboration to create an extravagant OOAK costume for a special custom Blythe by Liquiriziadolly for the "Enchanted Forest" theme of this years Blythecon Barcelona. I created a glittering couture frock with velvet leafed bodice, feathers and skeleton leaves dancing around her organza skirt. A stiff organza tutu of layered forest green organza helps to puff out the fantastic shaped skirt. Long gossamer sleeves dotted with beads and shimmering sequins shine in the sunlight like dewdrops on a hummingbird's wings. A glimmering band of satin and leaves crowns her forehead.

More photo's of this costume can be seen on my facebook and flickr
Visitors to the 2014 Blythecon Barcelona can be enchanted in person at Liquiriziadolly's stand.

Forest Minuet

For picnics in the forest, days dedicated to picking flowers and watching the clouds slowly creep across the sky, listening to the hum of cicadas and the trilling of birds.

This tiny dress for BJTales Alyona dolls is beautifully hand constructed, made from LE designer fabric from Liberty in London, with a fully lined bodice and re-enforced waist. A gathered frill at the hemline, and a tiny button and hidden snap enclosure at the back.

Will fit the darling resin "Alyona" dolls by BJTales, as well as the porcelain beauties with the "Ophelia" body.

Corpse bride - Part Two

The Tragic Tale of the Corpse Bride
PART TWO
(...continued from PART ONE)

Heartbroken and inconsolable, the bride flees to the cemetery, she can think of no other reason her love would not appear but for the worst. She collapses, her energy gone, her spirit crushed and broken, and her life evaporates like morning fog, leaving her translucent thin husk among the sorrows of cold stones spotted in moss and lichen.

Vines and ivy clamber over her tiny abandoned form...

Stone angels cradle her fragile spirit for as long as they can, begging her soul to return...

Time prevails, and her broken frame fades to soft light, a restless spirit who wanders between the graves, waiting for all eternity for her love who never appeared on their wedding day... On foggy mornings and at the melancholy hour of twilight, she is said to appear, softly calling, her frail voice breaking over the words:
"My life... my love... my love..."

THE END

Porcelain OOAk doll Ophelia by BJTales: Ottilia in the role of the Bride
Special commissioned three-piece costume by the House of Orchid's Designs:

Royal Songbird

The Songbird, prized for her melodic singing voice, is hosted in her gilded cage, decked with rare jewels at the Royal Palace. Here she sings for Kings and Queens, for babe's who will rule vast lands. She sings in her golden voice of lands yet to discover, or foreign castle's, and sometimes she sings of the freedom she's long forgotten.

One of our most detailed Songbird Corsets so far - satin brocade in cream and caramel shades of gold, paired wit imperial purple organza. The front features strings of cascading beads paired with a matching necklace, accented by a delicate gold-trimmed bow. Trims in honey and golden hue's accented hemline's and the spine, laced together with a delicate custard-coloured 1mm ribbon.

Truly an extravagant and elegant piece for these highly sought after elite art-dolls.

The Royal Songbird is created to fit the beautiful and highly limited line of Resin Enchanted Dolls.

Champagne Songbird

The songbird, prized for her enchanting and melodic voice is asked to perform again and again, taking listeners to far-away places, breaking hearts with her notes and weaving dreams with her words.

The latest couture creation from the House of Orchid's Designs has been hand-crafted to fit the exquisite new limited line of Resin Enchanted Dolls.

The Champagne Songbird design is a high-waisted skirt-corset with ruffles and decadent trims in varying shades of gold, ivory, and creams. Ivory lace is formed over a hand-painted stiff canvas structure, a matching necklace of beads circles her delicate neck.
A lace-up back ensures a skin-tight fit for the resin beauties, tiny beads decorating every aspect of this glorious corset.

Citrine - Custom Blythe - Available

Citrine - the discoverer of Lost Worlds

Custom Blythe 001 by Orchid's Designs

Garbed in her shining bronze armour, Citrine is a fearless and curious adventurer. The youngest daughter of distant royalty, she shed her life of pampered luxury to go after her heart and instincts...
wherever they may lead.

*

Citrine is a custom Blythe by Orchid's Designs - the first for adoption. She is a base SBL Bait, with advanced facial carving to give her a brand new look: extensive nose and mouth work including a full carve-through and carved teeth, philtrum, nostrils and shaped nose; her eyes, forehead and chin have had light sanding-alterations. Her face has been completely painted with artist pastels, watercolours and acrylics to bring her to glowing life.

Painted with Monika Viktoria's own signature style, Citrine has heavily blushed cheeks, cherry red lips, a rosy nose, and delicate blonde eyebrows elegantly shaped. Her eyes have had special attention paid, with tiny catlike eyeliner and many layers of pastels finely sealed. She has tiny beautyspots dotted over her pretty face, marks of her unique personality. She has two-sets of specially selected stock chips (hazelnut and coral) and two hand-painted metallic chips (Pompeian Red and Golden Tawny), and her eyelids are painted metallic bronze, whilst custom eyelashes fan her pretty eyes. She has been given the sleep-eye adjustment, as well as gaze correction. She has a tiny golden bell and a special brass vintage-style cameo pull-ring featuring a Blythe illustration by Monika Viktoria sealed under liquid resin glaze.

Her hair is her original SBL scalp (NOTE: unfortunately her hair came with a slight fault. A selection of the strands close to her scalp are "frizzed" - they are hidden underneath her helmet when she is fully dressed in her costume. They may be repairable with a professional hair spa, but I do not know. For this reason the price of this doll is significantly lower.)
